Tequilas Restaurant reopens after two-year closure from fire damage

After a fire forced it to close in 2023, Tequilas Restaurant will reopen its Rittenhouse doors on Tuesday.

The upscale Mexican restaurant announced on Instagram that it would be back in business at 1602 Locust St. on March 18 following two years of construction. Tables will be available Monday through Saturday from 5-9 p.m., reservations required.

In February 2023, the restaurant closed after a fire started in the kitchen. No one was harmed, but it caused significant damage to the building, even spreading to the ceilings on the first and second floors. At the time, it said it planned to reopen, but first needed to undergo extensive construction for repairs.

Owner David Suro Piñera opened Tequilas in 1986 down the street at 1511 Locust St. and later bought the current building in 2001. In May 2023, he told PhillyVoice that the closure gave him a chance to rethink the future of Tequilas, and that he planned to introduce "new, fun, 21st century Mexican food" alongside the classics upon reopening.
