A Brief History of Pittsburgh
Long before city skylines rose at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers, Native American nations inhabited the land known as Jaödeogë’. European settlers recognized the area’s strategic importance by the mid-18th century. The French built Fort Duquesne here, only to lose control to the British, who erected Fort Pitt in 1761 and named the village for British statesman William Pitt the Elder. The city incorporated in 1794 and grew as a critical gateway for westward expansion and as a manufacturing powerhouse. By the end of the 19th century, Pittsburgh produced more than half the nation’s steel.
